Driving on public roads with your trailer is subject to the highway code of the country in which you are. Failure to comply with the provisions of the highway code exposes you to penalties of various levels depending on the seriousness of the offence.
Highway Code R221-4 and R221-8: For all trailers whose GVW (Heading F2 on the registration document) is less than or equal to 750 kg, a simple B licence is sufficient to tow with any light vehicle that has the right to tow.
If the GVW of the car plus the GVW of the trailer is less than or equal to 3500kg, you need at least a B licence.
A B96 training course is compulsory if the total weight of the car and the trailer is between 3501 and 4250 kg.
Above 4250 kg, up to 7000 kg, you need a BE licence.
In all cases, the GVWR of the towing vehicle must be greater than the sum of the GVWR of the towing vehicle and the GVWR of the trailer.
All trailers with a GVWR (F2) of more than 750 kg must be equipped with a braking system. In the specific case, if the GVW (F2) of your trailer is greater than half the unladen weight (G1) of the towing vehicle, then the trailer must be equipped with a braking system.
The weight of the trailer must not exceed the towable weight of the towing vehicle. To find out this limit, please take the vehicle registration document of the towing vehicle and do the following:
